Asylum Applications Made in the EU

The number of applications for asylum made to EU countries significantly increased each year from 2010 until a peak in 2015.
Since 2015, the number has decreased with 2017 seeing a significant drop compared with the previous couple of years.

In 2016, the EU had 1.2 million refugees applying for asylum, of which the UK received 3% (39,240).
In 2016, 77% of all first-time asylum applications in the EU were made in Germany, Italy, and France.

Of the 650 thousand first-time asylum applications made in the EU in 2017, 52% were aged 18-34 years old and 23% were aged under 13.

The male-to-female ratio changes quite significantly depending on the age group, with the 14-17 and 18-34 age groups having around 3:1.
